Alginate casting

I have recently been looking into Walter Benjamins notion of auras in art and how artists such as Frank Stella and Robert Rymann wanted to highlight the idea of art as an object by working in a monochrome way and using non traditional conventions of display. Given looking at all of the philosophical ideas in art, I thought about actually casting my work as an object in plaster thus enhancing the objectivity. The bottom image is the plaster one on the left and the real one on the right. This was when the plaster was wet, it dried a pure white and the two are indistinguishable from each other unless touched. I loved the tactile appearance that the plaster got when cast as it was this tactile appearance like Alberto Burri’s work that I wanted to capture in my own. I’m going to try and cast some more.
