For my live project this year, I have been allowed to help one of the Mres students to curate an exhibition for one of Chesters most well respected lecturers. I first saw John Renshaws paintings a few months ago, in Chris’s office and I was immediately engrossed by them. In these first paintings, you get a clear indication of his style. He reduces everyday shapes and forms and then collages them together creating within the shapes, wonderful textures and a surface quality that draws the viewer in. At this stage I was drawn to the work as critical research as the texture within the paintings that the creates, reminded me of the texture and tactility that I was attempting to re-create in my own more three dimensional work, little did I know that I would eventually end up helping to put an exhibition together for such amazing artwork.
